Marsden students win TechHub CREST Challenge for second year running

Samuel Marsden Collegiate School Year 10 Digital Technology students Leila Barber, Linda Zhang and Kellen Zeng have won the 2017 TechHub CREST Challenge (Wellington region). The challenge was for students to come up with a brief to address a need within their school and then research, design and develop a prototype digital application in response to the brief. The girls developed an App that students can use to follow their House points, find out about school events where they could show support and add to their House points by attending. They named their project #Spirit (SMS spirit tracker).

Marsden School had a total of four teams involved in the project. The other teams came up with an App to encourage reading in primary school students, a community hub for social projects such as beach clean ups and a budget food App for university students. “We could only put forward one team for the TechHub Challenge”, said Acting Principal Margaret Adeane, “But we are very proud of the work done by all our students and the staff who supported them. It is exciting that Marsden has won this award for two years running now.” 

Digital Technology is an option for Year 7 – 13 students at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, and coding is taught from Year 1. Marsden has recently opened their ‘Waihanga’ (meaning to: construct, make, build, create, generate) space, a makerspace where students work collaboratively and independently on projects of their own devising. Equipped with a 3D printer, laser-cutter, electronics, craft and hardware supplies, tools and digital devices, the possibilities are limitless. “Our Waihanga is all about encouraging students to be innovative, creative and fostering entrepreneurship and we are proud to lead the way in giving our young women the skills they need to thrive beyond school”, says Adeane.
