ACG Tauranga's Sports Complex up for national award
ACG Tauranga’s Sports Complex has been nominated for the 2018 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, run by the Registered Master Builders Association.
The awards exist to recognise innovative construction projects and share innovation happening across the sector.
The gym, which is used for sport, fitness, teaching, assembly, performance, inter-school games, holiday programmes, gala days, open days and more, consists of a full-size court area for basketball, netball, volleyball and badminton with bleachers on both sides, changing rooms, plant rooms and storage areas.
Maximum use has been made of natural ventilation and light throughout the 1,337-square-metre building.
Construction company Hawkins overcame a number of challenges during the build including poor weather; new government seismic regulations; a heightened need for safety while school was in operation; and the delivery of a large main steel girder truss which eventually had to be transported in three pieces and assembled on site.
The result was a sports complex with an extremely high degree of skill and workmanship, and with no corner that can’t be used, a Hawkins spokesperson said.
“The school wanted a high-performing building and they got it.”
Babbage Consultants Limited designed the facility, which was built by Hawkins Construction Limited. The 2018 winners will be announced at a national gala event on 18 May at Skycity in Auckland.
