How Chartwells is Transforming the Culinary Landscape within the Residential Education Market

In an era shaped by overstimulation, young people’s understanding of food has evolved significantly. With unprecedented access to diverse culinary experiences through social media, chef influencers, or popular TV shows like FX’s The Bear, today’s students have developed sophisticated tastes and a heightened awareness of food and nutrition. In response to these changing preferences, Chartwells, the leading provider of catering services within New Zealand’s education sector, has embraced the challenge by setting a new benchmark in residential catering tailored to the needs of today’s youth.

School kitchens and dining facilities are often outdated or appear old and worn despite their crucial role in student life. These facilities have frequently lagged in modernization and innovation efforts. However, in recent years, Chartwells has spearheaded the transformation of culinary experiences in residential settings by creating exciting, bespoke solutions that enhances dining quality and student satisfaction.

A standout example of Chartwells’ transformative impact is evident at St Cuthbert’s School, where in 2023 they implemented change across all aspects of catering at the boarding house, café, tuckshop, functions, events, and the cleaning services.

The dining hall and kitchen underwent a complete overhaul. Brand new, state of the art kitchen equipment was installed. The servery was equipped with modern induction units and the dining hall with new salad wells, and central islands topped with marble counters that beautifully showcase the diverse food offerings. This upgraded facility now serves as a visually striking and welcoming centrepiece upon entering the dining hall.

To enhance the experience for the girls, all tables were refitted with colour-matched table tops, ensuring a consistent look throughout the dining hall.

An underutilized corner of the hall was transformed into the vibrant Glasgow Bar, named in honour of Violet Wood, St Cuthbert’s first principal. The area received a makeover with lighter wooden floorboards reinstating the original flooring, complemented by new LED lighting that illuminated the space.

The transformation at St Cuthbert’s has left a lasting impression on students, with many expressing their initial reaction upon entering the dining hall as “WOW”. Since Chartwells assumed operations in 2023, they have led the students, staff, and parents on a journey of excellence, consistently earning praise and recognition for delivering on their commitments. Results from the latest student survey showed a 92% satisfaction rate among students. The school community often hears feedback from others expressing envy for what St Cuthbert’s now enjoys.

This commitment to quality and innovation is evident in its diverse portfolio of clients, which includes Saint Kentigern College, Diocesan School For Girls, Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Hamilton Boys’ High School, Hamilton Girls’ High School, Te Aute College, Hukarere Girls’ College, John McGlashan College, Waitaki Boys’ High School and of course, St Cuthbert’s College.

Chartwells is committed to fostering environments that reflect the unique spirit of each school and its community – the dining hall is more than just a place to eat – it’s a vibrant social community where students and staff come together. It’s a place that should encourage connection and friendship. Whether through Masterclass cooking sessions with celebrity chefs or the bright lights of the Glasgow Smoothie Bar at St Cuthberts, these initiatives not only enhance the experience but also contributes to a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that supports the overall well-being and satisfaction of students and staff alike.

By leveraging insights into evolving tastes and nutritional preferences, Chartwells not only adapts menus to reflect these trends but also introduces innovative and diverse options, ranging from street-style food carts to Michelin-starred plates. These changes, driven by our expert chefs and dietitians, ensure that the dining experience is consistently fresh, exciting, and aligned with contemporary food trends.

This approach is underscored by a commitment to quality and sustainability. By sourcing locally and emphasizing fresh, seasonal ingredients, Chartwells ensures that every meal not only satisfies but also educates about the importance of sustainable food practices. By collaborating closely with each institution, Chartwells ensures a deep understanding of every student customer. This fosters meaningful connections and ensures that dietary preferences, cultural considerations, and nutritional requirements are all met with precision and care.

Through continuous innovation and a steadfast commitment to client satisfaction, Chartwells has set a benchmark in the culinary landscape of New Zealand’s residential market. As the demand for high-quality, nutritious, and culturally sensitive meals grows, Chartwells remains dedicated to shaping the future of dining experiences in educational settings across the nation and welcomes more schools to join the Chartwells model.
