Co-education reinforces Huntley School’s commitment to developing well rounded individuals

As we mark the 10th anniversary of our transition to co-education, it is both a time of reflection and a celebration of the profound changes that have shaped our school’s journey. For 119 years, our institution was dedicated exclusively to boys, a tradition steeped in history and pride. However, in 2014, we made a transformative decision to embrace co-education, welcoming girls into our community for the first time. It was also very fitting this year for the Old Boys and Girls’ Association to award classroom teacher, Barbara Pratt, honorary old girl status for her 37 years (and counting) of service to Huntley School.

Co-education has allowed us to broaden our educational horizons, ensuring that our students are prepared to thrive in a diverse world.

Incorporating girls into our school has transformed the dynamics of our academic and social life. Classroom discussions have become more vibrant and multifaceted, enriched by varied viewpoints and of course we still have boys dressed as girls (and vice versa) in the school plays as some traditions need never to change. This diversity has encouraged critical thinking and enhanced problem-solving skills, preparing our students for a world where they will work alongside individuals from all backgrounds.

Moreover, co-education has reinforced our commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. By interacting daily with peers of different genders, students learn the value of empathy, respect, and teamwork. These are not merely academic skills but essential life skills that will serve them well in their future endeavors. On the sporting front, it was rewarding to see our first girls make the 1st XI cricket team this year.

Our boarding and day school environment has also been invigorated by the shift to Co-Education. The shared experiences of both boys and girls living and learning together have fostered a sense of community and camaraderie. This integration has strengthened our school spirit and enhanced the feeling of family.

As we celebrate this milestone, we acknowledge how far we have come and reaffirm our dedication to providing an inclusive, forward-thinking education.

We are celebrating this milestone with a Cocktail Evening and will be reflecting on not just about the past decade but about the future we are shaping. By embracing co-education, we are nurturing well-rounded individuals who are prepared to lead with integrity and respect in a global society.

Together, we continue to build a school that stands as a flagship school of grit, determination and pride.
