Creating supportive school environments | Psychological Safety with Komodo

What is ‘Psychological Safety’ and how can it help us create a thriving school environment?

Brought to you by Komodo Wellbeing & Independent Schools of New Zealand. Join Komodo Wellbeing Psychotherapist, Hannah Longley as she explores the concept of Psychological Safety and what this looks like for staff and students within schools. Hear from Amy Joe, Director of Wellbeing at Scots College about its approach to Psychological Safety and how it uses data to inform environment-enriching positive psychology practices. Designed for both teachers and senior leaders, attendees will leave this session with an understanding of Psychological Safety and some practical suggestions for improvements that can be made in the classroom and the wider school community.

Speakers:

Hannah Longley is part of the psychology team at Komodo Welling, providing support to customer success and marketing, she ensures that Komodo is providing psychologically accurate guidance to our schools. Hannah is a registered child and adolescent psychotherapist, with almost a decade of experience and a masters level qualification in psychotherapy. Hannah’s main area of work is providing long term therapeutic support to youth, with a specialist focus in working in youth suicide prevention, bereavement and trauma. After working at a NGO for a number of years, Hannah now works at a primary / intermediate school, alongside her role at Komodo.  Hannah sees her youth therapist role as a preventative one, aiming to support youth through challenging times and major adversity, to set them up for success in adulthood. Hannah is passionate about not only supporting youth through hardship but engaging in long term work to address not just the symptoms of mental ill health, but the deeper underlying causes.  Hannah uses a range of different therapeutic modalities in her work, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, art and play therapy, and DBT / CBT, and believes in taking a holistic approach in her work, seeing the client as a whole person

Amy Joe is the Director of Wellbeing at Scots College and a Registered Nurse, and has been at the College since 2021. As Director of Wellbeing, Amy has direct oversight of the provision of Counselling and Nursing Services at the College. She also coordinates all the wellbeing resources, health and wellbeing initiatives, and services for students, staff, and the College community. Amy provides direct mental health nursing support to students and staff at the College using a holistic lens and via strength based, solution focussed, and ACT approaches. Amy has been nursing for over 18 years and has a clinical nursing background in Mental Health nursing, working across many ages and stages of life, walking alongside individuals and their families in the community, inpatient units, and rehabilitation specialties. She has a Bachelor of Nursing, two Postgraduate Certificates in Mental Health Nursing and Forensic Psychiatric Care, and a Master of Health Care.
