Mark Wilson began his tenure as Rector (Principal) of St Andrew’s College at the start of 2025, becoming the 11th Rector since the College was founded in 1917. With over 30 years in education, Mark has taught in eight schools across New Zealand, spanning independent, state, single sex and co-educational institutions.
Mark brings extensive leadership experience having served as a successful Principal for over 15 years across three complex and highly successful co-educational schools.
He has previously served on the national executive of SPANZ (Secondary School Principals Association of New Zealand), and was awarded the prestigious Woolf Fisher Fellowship in 2018, which allowed him to visit overseas schools and attend an educational leadership course at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. These experiences have enabled Mark to develop strong professional relationships with many schools and friendships with Heads of leading schools both in New Zealand and internationally.
Through this teaching background, Mark has developed a strong belief in the importance of schools making a difference in the lives of young people. He values the autonomy of independent schools to set the educational benchmark in developing both the character and intellect of our young people. Mark understands the importance of surrounding himself with great people, believing that success comes from having a champion team, not a team of individual champions.
“From my perspective, St Andrew’s College is my school of choice based on its strong traditions and yet progressive character, its inclusive co-educational environment to equip our young people for the real world, highly successful achievements, faith-based values and character development, engaged community, and its potential to be the beacon of the highest educational quality. It is a privilege to be part of this very special school and help lead it into a bright future ahead,” says Mark.
