Navigating the New Frontier: An AI Policy and Guidance Framework for Schools by Akotech

In an era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the educational landscape, schools are at a critical juncture of transformation. The emergence of AI technologies, including tools like ChatGPT, brings both opportunities and challenges that necessitate a nuanced approach to policy formulation and implementation.

The rapid evolution of AI technology presents an unparalleled opportunity to address the critical issues plaguing our education system: teacher workload, burnout, and shortage. As a technology school providing extra-curricular programs, AkoTech have not only recognised this potential but are actively developing a solution. Our mission is clear: to save each teacher 10 hours per week through AI integration, transforming their roles by providing tools such as personalised lesson plan creation, quizzes and rubrics and student evaluation reporting etc.

The Need for AI Policy and Guidance:

AI in education offers immense potential to reduce teacher workload, burnout and staff shortages, personalised learning and operational efficiency. However, it also raises critical issues around ethical usage, data privacy, and the evolving role of educators. A structured AI policy and guidance framework is essential for harnessing AI’s benefits while mitigating its associated risks.

Framework Overview:

AI policy and guidance framework encompasses three key stages:

Stage 1 – Policy and Guidance Development: This foundational stage involves formulating clear, ethical guidelines for AI usage in educational settings. The policies focus on responsible AI tool deployment for teaching and learning, ensuring data privacy, and upholding ethical standards.

Stage 2 – Organisational Learning and Professional Learning Development (PLD): With the goal of reducing teacher workload, this stage emphasises equipping educators with the skills andknowledge to effectively integrate AI tools into their teaching. PLD sessions will cover AI literacy and practical strategies to balance AI with traditional teaching methods, addressing staff workload and enhancing classroom management.

Stage 3 – Improvement and Transformation: The final stage explores the broader application of AI in education, focusing on reducing teacher workload, addressing staff shortages, and enhancing student learning outcomes through personalised and adaptive learning strategies.

Addressing the Dichotomy and the Need for AI Literacy:

The perception of AI as both a beneficial tool and a potential threat calls for a balanced, informed approach. By fostering AI literacy, we aim to demystify AI for educators and students, promoting an understanding of its applications and societal implications.

The Growing Importance of Computer Science:
As AI becomes integral to our lives, understanding computer science principles is increasingly vital. This knowledge is essential not only for effective AI usage but also for contributing to its ethical and innovative applications in education.

Conclusion:

Adopting an AI policy and guidance framework is more than keeping pace with technology; it is about creating a future-ready education system. We invite local schools and their communities to be at the forefront of integrating AI into education, preparing both teachers and students for an AI-augmented educational landscape.

A Call to Action:

We encourage you to engage in dialogues around AI policy and guidance, participate in PLD opportunities, and embrace AI’s transformative potential in education. Our aim is to reduce teacher workload by 10 hours per week.
